ECCE

The idea and inspiration for this solo piece came when we (Sybrig Dokter and Benno Voorham) met Paul Gazzola (an Australian choreographer/dancer) in the foyer of Dansens Hus in Stockholm during the Panacea festival, March 2004. He was walking around with a clothes rack and offered people a temporary change of identity by putting on some clothes from the rack. One could leave ones own clothes for somebody else to slip into. The act of leaving your clothes and putting on somebody elses was unexpectedly enjoyable as though changing into a temporary new identity.

This change of costume/identity inspired us to make a short solo that Benno performed at the 14th Potsdamer Tanztage in May 2004.

The 20 minutes solo that Benno performed in Potsdam was created around ideas and questions of identity. The solo played with both comical and more serious, dramatic qualities. Being interested in the relation between dance and the theatrical imagination, we created different contexts for the character of this solo. The form of the 20 minutes solo was a ‘suite in four dances’.
